Domestic Violence: How Social Media Is Helping Victims Find Their Voices *What's Your Own Say About it????

Domestic violence has a long, ugly and subsisting history in Nigeria, or anywhere for that matter.
To get an idea, all you need do is cast your mind back on the recent tragedy out of South Africa where a man killed his girlfriend and burnt her body.
In general, Many have been scarred, killed, and others permanently left numb to the happiness that marriages/relationships are meant to be about.
Recently, I came across a narration by a daughter on Twitter, of how her mother suffered continuous physical and emotional abuse from her father.
So bad was this abuse that the mum lived in perpetual fear and knew no happiness until she split from that man. [Ironically he initiated that divorce process.]
In the past, women hardly came out to talk about these things, choosing to bottle in all the pain and suffering in silence – and when suffered domestic violence, they could not bear the shame of even breathing a word of it to anyone.
These days, thankfully, people are becoming more ‘vocal’ about abuse, and this is largely due to the availability of social media platforms.
Actress Mercy Aigbe alleges that she was battered by her husband, Lanre Gentry; Singer Muma Gee released pictures alleging that her enstranged husband had abused her, Tonto Dikeh also came out on Instagram to talk about being abused.
Even Fuston Utomi, who owns the Foston Musik which Patoranking is signed to, has been called out on Instagram by Ajoke, his ex-wife, for his alleged acts of savagery on her during the time they were married.
Although Oladunni Churchill has come out with counterclaims of his own against Tonto, it is still obvious that a pattern is emerging here – social media has provided an extra avenue for people to come out of the closet about abusive marriages.
In the past, people only had the options of forever keeping quiet, reporting to the police, members of the abuser’s family or theirs.
These days though, abused persons are running to the haven provided by social media to share their stories and narrate their ordeals.
So great has been social media’s influence on recent domestic violence narrative that even men have hopped on these platforms to raise the alarm when they have also been subjected to abuse.
Even men have found an outlet for their sufferings on social media (Vanguard)
Take for instance, Twitter user Rosanwo who narrated that his wife had ceaselessly abused him, once leading to a shift of his spine.
Will domestic violence suddenly end because few perpetrators have been called out on social media platforms? Is this even the way to go about putting a stop to domestic violence?
Of course, stopping domestic violence is a very serious matter which surely goes beyond sharing painful stories and narrating marital struggles on social media.
But you could refer to these shared stories as the cliché first few drops that later form a mighty ocean, or more accurately, the first footsteps taken on a journey of a thousand miles.
Muma Gee shows evidence to back up her domestic violence claim (BN)
There is still a lot more that needs to be done – first, the laws guiding these matters need to be better, and punishments need to get stricter than 3 years for men and 2 years for women as established in sections 353 and 360 of the criminal code.
The police will also need to do better in enforcing these laws. A lot better.
There has been much talk about how men wouldn’t go to the police to report domestic violence because they’ll be laughed at, and called weaklings who can’t even ‘handle’ an ordinary woman.
It has also been heard that some women would complain to the cops about being beaten by their husbands and the issues would be treated as a triviality.
These things are unfounded, of course, but we all know what they say: no smoke without fire.
Anyway, the fact remains that only a small sample of victims actually come out to report these cases.
So how exactly is the police supposed to crack down on offences that are not being reported, or why should new laws be made to curb an offence that is not being ‘perpetrated enough’ to warrant a review of the existing laws?
The first step to containing this ever-present epidemic of domestic violence is to have victims – men and women – speak out about what they are going through.
There can be no doubt that social media has so far helped to drive forward the narrative on domestic violence, its damaging effects and the need for both abused men and women to speak up before it’s too late.
One can only hope that more abused people get the strength and bravery to come out from the shadows where they stay and suffer the battery and torture in silence.
And as evidence has proven, social media will always be an available outlet if it ever gets too hard or embarrassing to reach out to anyone in person ..

5 Reasons Some Women Are Scared Of Getting Married

Saying the words “I do” could be very frightening for some women. The reasons, why women are scared of getting married, vary from person to person.

Below are five of them.

1. Emotional and financial insecurity

These can be argued as two major reasons any woman would dread the idea of marriage. The tendency for the blazing fire of love between them and their partners to dwindle over time scares women a lot.

The questions – Will he love me still when I get bloated from the rigours of childbirth? What if some days we run out of things to say and the conversation dries up? What happens if he becomes financially unstable? – and much more worry many a woman.

2. Fear of commitment

Till death do us part! The thought of having to succumb to the authority of a man, dedication to a long-term cause, giving birth and raising children, keeping up with relatives and in-laws, taking care of the home, the opportunities forgone to stick to one person; and combining all of these with work, makes marriage seem scary to some women.

3. Career pursuit

Some women are literally married to their jobs – so what’s the need for a man.

They dedicate more of their time to their profession and climbing the ladder of success, often neglecting their emotional needs and those of their partners.

For them, marriage will create a lacuna between them and work. Thus, they would rather remain single.

4. Fear of the unknown

Unarguably, the future is plagued with many uncertainties, and nature or perhaps fate has forced the human to hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

The fear of what the future holds is a withdrawing force for women.

5. Risk of divorce

Some women, because of their not-too-good experience in broken homes or the stigma attached to being a divorcee, would rather remain single than get married and risk breaking up.

Bin Laden’s son Hamza threatens US over father’s death

Osama bin Laden’s son reportedly seeks to avenge his father’s death and is poised to become the new leader of Al Qaeda.

Personal letters seized in the raid that killed bin Laden show that his son, Hamza, is set on avenging his father’s death, Ali Soufan, a former FBI agent, told CBS News in an interview that will air Sunday.

“He tells him that…he remembers ‘every look…every smile you gave me, every word you told me,” Soufan said about bin Laden’s son. Soufan also told CBS News that Hamza wrote that he considers himself “to be forged in steel.”

Soufan said that Hamza’s path to become the leader of the terrorist organisation was created years ago when he was used as a propaganda tool in bin Laden’s videos.

He was seen sometimes holding a gun.

The agent added that he has even started to sound like his father.

“His recent message that came out, he delivered the speech as if it’s his father, using sentences, terminology that was used by Osama bin Laden,” Soufan said.

Hamza is believed to be about 28 years old and has been named as a “specially designated global terrorist” by the U.S., as he has recorded four audio messages in the last two years, aimed at the U.S.

“He’s basically saying, ‘American people, we’re coming and you’re going to feel it,” Soufan said.

“And we’re going to take revenge for what you did to my father. Iraq, Afghanistan’. The whole thing was about vengeance.”

Davido welcomes second baby with American girlfriend

Nigerian artiste, Davido, has just welcomed his second child with his American girlfriend, Amanda.

The 24-year-old singer broke the news on SnapChat on Tuesday evening and also disclosed that their new daughter had been named Hailey. He also put up a video of the mother of his daughter and her mother on SnapChat.

Davido checked Amanda into a hospital on Tuesday and begged his fans on SnapChat to say a word of prayer for him as he awaited the birth of his daughter.

The singer’s baby mama is based in Atlanta, in the United States.

The attention-loving singer updated his fans on the progress of the labour on his Snapchat handle and also took them on a tour of the maternity ward.

After several initial denials, the singer confirmed that he was going to be a father the second time in an Instagram interview with Beat FM on-air-personality, Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi, in March.

Two weeks after he granted the interview, a young lady, Ayotomide Labinjo, also stepped forward alleging that the ‘Dami Duro’ singer was the father of her daughter, three-year-old Aanuoluwapo.

The 26-year-old lady alleged she had a sexual affair with the singer in 2013 and got pregnant and had a baby girl. The singer denied the claims.

Davido welcomed his first daughter, Imade, with Sophie Momodu in May 2015.

Sophie is a niece of popular journalist, Dele Momodu. Just like his biggest music rival, Wizkid, Davido now has two children from two different women.

In January 2016, the pop star and his baby-mama were involved in a feud over the custody of their daughter.

Davido’s family took custody of the baby following allegations that Imade had been infected by marijuana through breast-feeding.

Sophie, a budding fashion designer, claimed that Davido’s family abducted the baby and planned taking her abroad but Immigration officials helped her stop the trip.

The controversy led to a public spat involving Mr. Momodu, Davido and his billionaire father, Adedeji Adeleke.

Both parents currently have joint custody of their daughter. In 2014, a 23-year-old model, Shanielle ‘Sunshine’ Haye, also claimed to be five months pregnant with twin girls for the singer.

France's Macron beats Le Pen to win presidency, toughest tasks to come

Independent centrist Emmanuel Macron will become France’s youngest ever president after earning a decisive win the country’s run-off vote on Sunday.

The win marks a climax for Macron’s meteoric rise from relative obscurity, but the tough task of building a governing majority for his newcomer En Marche! movement is yet to come.

The 39-year-old political neophyte, who had never been elected to any office before winning his country’s top job on Sunday, beat anti-immigration Europhobe Marine Le Pen, with 65.8 percent of the vote to Le Pen’s 34.2 percent, according to estimates released after final polls closed at 8pm Paris time.

Brussels' relief The wide margin of victory is not a record in French presidential politics – conservative President Jacques Chirac beat Le Pen’s father, National Front founder Jean-Marie Le Pen, 82.2 percent to 17.8 percent in 2002 – but it does top all recent polling in a twist-after-twist presidential campaign.

With double her father’s score 15 years ago, the populist Le Pen’s figure nevertheless marks a watershed moment in the history of the far-right National Front. It affirms her place as a force to be reckoned with in French politics just as the country’s political landscape is in unprecedented flux after first-round defeats of both of the political forces on the conservative right and socialist left that have governed France for decades. In remarks shortly after polls closed on Sunday, Le Pen said, “The National Front… must deeply renew itself in order to rise to the historic opportunity and meet the French people’s expectations.” She pledged during her brief address to supporters to “propose to start this deep transformation of our movement in order to make a new political force.”

The pro-European Macron’s victory will have Brussels breathing a sigh of relief when a victory for Le Pen would have sent the European Union hurtling into existential crisis. In his first brief speech as president-elect, Macron pledged, “I will work to mend the ties between Europe and its citizens.” Indeed, Le Pen’s defeat marks a new setback for Europhobe populist parties across the bloc after recent defeats in the Netherlands and Austria. But it will be lost on no one that in France’s political new order, Le Pen, her pro-sovereignty ally Nicolas Dupont-Aignan and far-leftist Euroskeptic Jean-Luc Mélenchon, combined for nearly 50 percent of the French vote.

Macron's subdued victory speech During his lightning rise to power, Macron benefitted from a long series of political unlikelihoods, including the elimination of not one but two favourites in each of the mainstream heavyweight parties’ political primaries. In selecting François Fillon for the conservative Les Républicains and Benoît Hamon for the Socialist Party -- each a hardliner on the right and left sides of the political spectrum, respectively – the party primaries left a wide political breach open in the center for Macron; Fillon’s sudden scandals crippled his campaign while Mélenchon’s charismatic campaign put him ahead of the less dynamic Hamon. At every step, Macron seized the advantage.

But the political newcomer, a onetime banker, former Elysée Palace advisor and ex-economy minister, was criticised for his behaviour on election night after the first round on April 23. His speech then was seen as inappropriately euphoric given he would face the populist Le Pen for the presidency; his decision to summon associates for a soirée at La Rotonde, a chic Paris brasserie, was blasted as triumphalism.

On Sunday night, Macron’s first, short speech as president-elect was distinctly solemn. “I know the the divisions in our nation that led some to cast a vote for the extremes; I respect them,” he said. “I know the anger, the anxiety, the doubts that a large part of you also expressed. It is my responsibility to hear them,” he added. Still, the centrist struck the optimistic tones that set his campaign apart, partly in the final fortnight showdown with Le Pen.

“We are the heirs of a great history and the great humanist message for the world,” Macron said. “We must carry them into the future and give them a new lifeblood.”

Le Pen's lacklustre record win Populist spitfire Le Pen’s lower than expected score may well be the upshot of a lacklustre end to her nevertheless record run. Her televised debate performance on May 3 was roundly panned by pundits and the last polls before a media blackout on Friday at midnight already appeared to reflect voters’ poor assessment of that TV battle. Confusion over Le Pen’s plans for the euro currency after her post-first-round alliance with Dupont-Aignan may also have cost her support in the dying days of the campaign.

One savvy salvo in Le Pen’s run-off bid -- a stealth incursion onto Macron’s turf, his native Amiens, to visit striking workers at a Whirlpool plant slated for closure -- appeared to backfire when the centrist managed to turn Le Pen’s move to his advantage; Macron waded into a lion’s den to discuss the workers’ plight with them at length on the factory’s parking lot when Le Pen had done little more than pose for selfies with picketing employees.

Le Pen was never expected to win this race, but polling that saw her inching above 40 percent in voter intentions had spurred anxiety in some quarters. Le Pen’s niece, the ultra-conservative parliamentarian Marion Maréchal-Le Pen, had told the French daily L’Opinion as recently as Thursday that a 40 percent score would be “a huge victory” for the National Front.

No honeymoon in sight Just moments after Macron’s first speech on Sunday night, the other headline populist in this race, Mélenchon, took the stage to call on his seven million first-round voters to mobilise for the legislative elections next month. “The legislative elections must show after a vote of refusal and fear, the moment has come for a positive choice,” he said. Mélenchon finished fourth in the first round and pointedly refused to explicit any backing for Macron against Le Pen.

High abstention estimated at 26 percent of registered voters and the more than 4.2 million voters who cast a blank or spoiled ballot in Sunday’s run-off, a record in a French presidential election, suggest a lack of enthusiasm for the new president-elect. Macron is unlikely to benefit from the honeymoon period enjoyed by his predecessors. But his most important, most difficult task has already begun: Turning his luck and momentum, and the disarray of his myriad political adversaries, into a majority that allows Macron to govern the country after legislative elections conclude on June 18.
