In a twist of events following his exit from Triple MG, Nigerian pop singer, Iyanya has announced that he has officially signed with Mavin Records.
The artiste made the announcement with the release of a new song featuring Don Jazzy and Dr Sid, titled Up 2 Sumting, the new song, which is produced by Mavin Records’ Don Jazzy, was released on Monday, which happens to be the singer’s 30th birthday.
The news, which generated a bit of excitement on social networks, was broken by Don Jazzy via his Twitter handle.
“Iyanya brings his own unique style and sound to the Mavin Records family. From the first time I stepped into the studio with him, there was an instant chemistry and energy.
“He is an amazing talent and he has great musical versatility. This is an exciting time for us and our fans have a lot of great music to look forward to,” Jazzy stated.
Iyanya, on his part, says that he is at a decision-making curve in his music career where he has to make the right professional and creative decisions.
“At this point, I realised the need to put in solid structures in place to move to the next level of my career. I think I have found that professional and creative backbone in Mavin Records,” Iyanya stated.
With this move, Iyanya now has Tiwa Savage, Dr Sid, D’Prince, Korede Bello, Reekado Banks and Di’Ja as label mates.

Police recover 19 cars, SUVs from ex-IGArase

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has ordered an investigation into the purchase and distribution of vehicles by his predecessors.

It was gathered that the probe was informed by the discovery that retiring officers, including former  IGs and Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, were in the habit of appropriating police vehicles for their personal use.

Findings by Punch on Sunday show that the probe, which is being handled by the Special Investigation Panel, had identified and recovered 19 police vehicles from former IG, Solomon Arase.

Some of the vehicles include assorted sedans, Sports Utility Vehicles and pick-up vans.The vehicles, it was learnt, were apart from the four vehicles he was entitled to take awaywith him on retirement.

A senior officer, who is familiar with the investigation, said the SIP was still working torecover five additional vehicles from the former police boss.

It was learnt that the SIP, headed by Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Ali Amodu, (retd.), had also recovered a number of police vehicles from other retired DIGs.

The recovered vehicles were said to have been distributed to newly promoted Commissioners of Police and AIGs.

Recession is biting hard as Nigeria’s biggest employers of labour aside the government, Dangote Group has fired 48 members of staff.

The group which is owned by Africa and Nigeria’s richest man, Aliko Dangote sacked 36expatriate and 12 Nigerian workers from the group’s headquarters and one of the subsidiaries, Dangote Cement Plc.

According to a report by Punch newspaper, the sack of the workers was not unconnected with the current high cost of running business in thecountry occasioned by the unavailability of foreign exchange and the unprecedented hike in the naira to dollar exchange rate.

It was reported that  the huge amounts in foreign currencies being paid to the expatriate workers had become a burden on Dangote due to the steady depreciation in the value of the naira and the difficulties of raising enough dollars.

Renowned stand-up comedian, Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has called on the Federal Government to make happen the change it promised about curbing piracy in the entertainment industry.
The rib cracker said security measures must be put to work before this can be achieved.
Speaking with Encomium, the ’30 days in Atlanta’ actor said, “The challenge of piracy is alarming. Piracy worldwide is not only in Nigeria. It is really bad.
“Before you put your work in the cinema, it is already pirated. Good enough, they allowed me to enjoy 30 days in Atlanta for 30 days. We have done our cinema runs, we have worked out our modalities, though we cannot totally take it out of the picture.
“There would always be somebody who will sell out. I am hoping the Federal Government would apply the change they talked about in the movie industry too.
“I live in fear knowing that my movie would be released. We believe the security measures we have put in place would work,” he said.
Speaking further, the father of one said the reason why a lot of comedians are going into movie production was not because stand-up comedy was dying.
According to him, “No, if you say stand-up comedy is dying because comedians are going into acting, you would be getting it wrong, it would mean Hollywood is dead. We can’t say that, Steve Havey was doing stand up comedy before now, he is still doing movies as well.
“Everything is about entertainment. I love to be an encompassing show biz person. The only thing I know I wouldn’t venture into is music. I know I can’t sing to save my life,” the Master of Ceremonies, MC, quipped.

New Oba of Benin crowned as Ewuare II

The newly crowned monarch of the ancient Benin Kingdom will be known as Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku’ Akpolokpolo Ewuare 11.

He unveiled his official title today at the presentation of staff of office ceremony, which was attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo;the host governor, Adams Oshiomhole; and Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

The coronation had earlier been performed secretly according to tradition before the presentation ceremony.The News Agency of Nigeria correspondent, who witnessed the event, reports that the crowning ceremony was performed at about 3.30 a.m. at Usama Palace, far from the pryingeyes of cameras and press men.

A mammoth crowd later on Thursday escorted the Oba from Usama Palace to Orho-Okpata inBeninThe crowd had waited patiently while chanting songs of praises and incantation before he came out exactly 1:05 pm and finally left the palace by 1:20 pm.As it is the tradition, the Oba walked through Ore-oghene and stopped by at Oloto palace, one of the seven chiefs that took part in performing the crowning ceremony at dawn.

The Oba thereafter visited a shrine at Iwehen junction to pay homage according to tradition.
Then he walked through Ibiwe and later arrivedat Urho-Okpota where the crowning was officially performed by Chief Oliha of Benin.Among the dignitaries who witnessed the ceremony are Iweghe, Iwebos, Ibiwe chiefs andyouth, Ogbelaka chiefs, Isiemwenro guild , Ifieto, and Edigin N’Okakun.

The new monarch had relocated on October 11 to Usama palace to perform coronation rites, after spending three days at Urho-Okpota.
